Today's opera is by Johann Hasse who was quite important during his lifetime having written over 50 operas and a myriad of instrumental and vocal works as well. Today's opera is from 1742 and is based on the same libretto as Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aneas" and follows the story of Carthage's downfall and Dido's Death rather faithfully. We'll follow the opera with Schubert's 9th Symphony, "The Great," just because we can!

To follow our April Showers program, we'll look at 14 songs in order to share some May flowers including lilacs, daisies, violets, a bunch of roses, and more.

Others in the cast are Jose van Dam and Placido Domingo. George Solti conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra, on The Lyric Stage this Sunday (5/19 at 8 pm).
